3 Ways to Stop Sciatica that Cost No Extra Time

Do you suffer from sciatica? Read this article, it could make a world of difference to you.

“Up to 40% of people get sciatica at some point in their lives. It is a group of symptoms that respond well to treatment, but often worsen overtime without it.”

If you have sciatica you can’t sit without leg pain and the distraction tanks your productivity fast. You can’t bend forward so exercising goes out the window which makes you feel out of shape and unhealthy. You can’t sleep at night because all you can think about is your throbbing leg so you’re exhausted all the next day. If any of these sound like I am describing you keep reading because if you do not take action and break this cycle things only get worse.

I have been treating sciatica patients for over a decade now and I’ve discovered 3 ways to stop sciatica that cost no extra time. Once you apply the following strategies to your own life you’ll be able to work as much as you like, get back into shape and regain your energy. Best of all, simple changes happen quickly and provide the lasting relief you’re looking for to feel like yourself again.

“The 20-minute rule: Spinal discs can bulge after as little as 20-minutes of sitting leading to sciatica symptoms.”

If you’ve ever wanted to stop sciatica then keep reading, these next three simple ideas might just change your life. It all starts by removing common everyday sciatica causes, i.e. ‘negatives’.

1.   Make a List

List the things that make your sciatica symptoms flare, either during or after. These are often postures, sleeping positions or movements. The simple act of self-reflection can steer you away from the habits away that cause your symptoms.

2.   Set an Alarm

You likely have no idea how long you actually sit in one position and sitting too often causes spinal discs to bulge (a common cause of sciatica). Set an alarm to get up or change positions at least every 20 minutes.

3.   Weight Shift

When you stand or sit you likely have a habit of shifting your weight to one side 80%-90% of the time. Sciatica is often on one side or the other so balance the scales by shifting your weight to the other side 50% of the time.

Right now you’re thinking “moving around is going to interrupt my work day”. But, there is a lot you can do while standing, pacing or walking. You think “working for hours on end is more productive”. But, sciatica makes you distracted and exhausted, killing your productivity.

I had a patient recently with on and off sciatica after years of working at a computer. During an episode he would lose sleep, miss work and couldn’t ski with his family, his favourite activity. He felt drained, distracted and absent from his life. Sciatica was costing him BIG, to say the least.

He tried exercises, pain meds and rubs, and other treatments, but the sciatica always came back. He was adding many ‘positives’, but only ever got temporary relief. These things work, but relief is only lasting when you remove the ‘negative’ causes first.

He came to me to break the pain cycle, but I had news for him. I told him if he wants a different result this time, one that lasts, he has to do things different. I taught him how to use the 3-ways to stop sciatica while I also provided expert treatment. In the past year he has not had a single episode since. He has not missed work, sleeps great and had the best ski season he’s had in years!

If any of this relates to you, you’re not alone. We see sciatica patients so often that we created the ‘Stop Sciatica Action Plan‘. It is a step-by-step guide that helps you identify the causes of sciatica in your life and gives you fast action steps you can take now to stop it.
